Nephilim are a half-angelic species, the descendants of angels and humans.

Origin

All Nephilim are the result of relationships between angels or Archangels and human women. These relationships were commonplace millennia ago, before they became taboo. Afterwards, the majority of the offspring were killed, as they were feared to be too powerful. However, some survived, kept in hiding, and their descendants have now become the Nephilim. They traditionally intermarry within their own species to preserve their gifts and prevent them from weakening. Otherwise, if they intermarried with humans or most other species, the next generation would possess two abilities instead of four, and within two more generations the supernatural gifts would have died out. The only known exception to this rule is within Ethael. The Daevael are a similar new species, resulting from relationships between an Archangel and an Animagi.

Nephilim look completely human, normally, and there is no way for any human or normal supernatural being to identify one from sight. However, angels and Archangels may be capable of doing so. If this is possible, the method is currently unknown.

Nephilim Gifts

Normally a Nephilim has four gifts, often tied to the specific powers that their angelic parent or ancestor possesses. Thus, gifts which manipulate time, reality and light are common. Gifts which heal others or are self-protective were also common, originally, but these have become rarer as time progressed. Several of the gifts seem to linked to the angel or Archangel ancestor, e.g. Asaph is descended from the Archangel Michael, known for his fighting skills, and he possesses the ability of Martial Adaptation. Partial Nephilim, who have one non-Nephilim parent, have only two abilities unless more are gained from a non-human non-Nephilim parent.
